Synthesis Paper Shakeria Draper Louisiana Tech University Synthesis Paper CACREP Standard: Section II, 2.e. addresses counselors’ role in developing cultural self-awareness promoting cultural social justice, advocacy and conflict resolution, and other culturally supported behaviors that promote optimal wellness and growth of the human spirit, mind, and body. Previously, counseling was viewed as a â€Å"whites only† form of treatment with most research done on white or European descendants. Non-European descendants failed to believe counseling would benefit them or it was frown upon by their culture and communities. Counseling was viewed as ineffective for those of non-dominate culture. Culturally†¦show more content†¦Counselors who are unaware of diverse cultural viewpoints are more than likely to do intentional or unintentional damage when working within communities opposite of their own and with those whose cultures and worldviews differ from theirs. If a counselor is unaware of their own cultural identity, biases, and stereotypes, how then will they know if they are unintentionally causing harm to their clients or build rapport? Cultural self-awareness is relevant because counselors need to know their cultural identity and what they must offer their clients in a therapeutic relationship and to help clients become aware their cultural identities. CACREP Standard: Section II, 2.c addresses theories of multicultural counseling, identity development, and social justice. The systems theory or approach in multicultural counseling involves including the systems in which the client is a part of such as the client’s family system, communal system, and any environmental elements that influence and affect the client into the counseling framework. By including these systems, a counselor can gain insight on the client’s culture, worldviews, values, beliefs, and perspectives in a holistic manner.
